Reader's Journal # 1

                                                                                                                                                       8/17/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

This week I've been reading the book named Lincoln by Donald David Herbert. The reason I chose this because I am a person who is most interested in history.History is a great genre I'm really interested in.It's very important for me to learn about history because there are some that are based on the things that we say or do these days. Now this book is a biography based on America's 16th president Abraham Lincoln. Telling the whole life of Lincoln from childhood.

This passage really taught me a lot more about Abraham Lincoln.Because learning about the childhood really was a bit sad.Because his family was just on their rich, new land they bought in Kentucky and then were attacked by Indians for apparent reason. And they inmediately killed his grandfather and his grandfather's three sons were asking for help but didn't come in time and he died. Lincoln couldn't see his own grandfather and that didn't sound good when I read it.

I used strategies before reading this book and was thinking what I already know about the topic.I also skim and scan through the story. And also saw text features like images, bold print, and also the title.I mainly used the text features to really make me understand the article more. It really helped me have a better picture at what they were talking about. The strategies I used while reading was I skipped a unfamiliar word, keep on reading and then go back to the unfamiliar word.

Ths strategy really made me really help my vocabulary improve. I stopped and reviewed what has happened in the story so far. I also cross-checked some words in paragraphs and sentences in the story. And the strategies I've done when I finished reading was that I draw conlusuion. I thinked back and thought what I have read.At some part of the text I reread some of the text so I could understand what I'm reading.

Some non-fiction elements I were able to identify was that the genre was a biography because it talks about the life of Abraham Lincoln. The main idea was actually implied because I had to figure out what it was about. If I can give another title for this story it will be " The Life of the 16th President" because it brings the main idea right there.I think the essential message of the passage was that our 16th president worked so hard to keep our country safe and sound. The 5 diffrent text features I found was pictures, bold print, subtitles, captions, italics. The eason I think the author made this book to know more about or know about Abraham Lincoln. And to also look over history. And to see why people do stuff that they couldn't do before.

In all, this was very great article to read and learn about. If I can rate this I'll rate it a eight out of ten because it was very good to read and learn but somme of those things that mentioned in the book I already but it is still a great book.I will like to say thank to David Herbert for writing this book for making me learn more about our history's leaders.
